Solid hardwood is a traditional 3/4 inch thick floor. It comes prefinished and must be nailed down. It can be installed over plywood on any above grade area. Solid hardwood lastes for a very long time. It is easy to clean. It can be re-finished down the road extending its life almost indefinately.  It comes in many species, colors and widths. 

Engineered Hardwood is real wood. It comes in layers of wood that are adhered together to make the floor extremely tough and stable. Because it is more stable than solid wood, it can be installed over plywood OR concrete. It also can come in many different widths without the problems associated with solid hard wood. It is easy to clean and can be refinished down the road. Like solid hardwood it can last almost indefinately. It comes in many species, colors, widths and thicknesses.
